Ireland is likely to see further disruption to public transport even after the Red Weather Warning expires.

As it stands, no buses, trains, DART or LUAS services are currently running due to the extreme weather conditions caused by Storm Éowyn.

The entire country remains under a Red Weather Warning and the public have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel.

On Newstalk Breakfast, Iarnród Éireann's corporate communications manager Barry Kenny said there will be "disruption" after the Red Weather Warning lifts to ensure passenger safety.

"We will be sending our crews out around the network to make sure lines are clear," Mr Kenny said.

"We’re expecting a lot of fallen trees - we have to make sure [there is no damage to] overhead lines on the dart or level crossings.

"We have to make sure that the network is safe for trains to operate."

Once these safety checks are complete, the public transport networks will update passengers.

"We will certainly do everything we can to ensure we have at least some services later in the day," Mr Kenny said.

"I do expect it will be later in the day to get staff in and to send staff around the network.

"I think people are very understanding about the circumstances we’re working through today and the absolute necessity is to make sure staff and customers are safe."

Storm Éowyn

Last night, Ireland saw record-breaking gusts as Storm Éowyn made landfall.

Over 715,000 businesses and properties have been left without power and airports across Ireland have seen a large number of cancelled flights.
