One of the main gripes about Ireland are its public transport networks.

It's certainly something the people of Donegal can agree with. Because of history, geography and politics, the county's only access to the rest of the Republic is via a strip of border with Leitrim.

And while it has Donegal Airport and is also on the Bus Eireann network, it is particularly vulnerable in times of disruption or strikes as it is completely cut off from the rail network.

Although Donegal used to have rail networks until 1960, Iarnrod Eireann does not currently provide a rail service into the Ulster County.

That is a situation that all of the Ulster counties south of the border have in common, again due to politics and geography. Although all serviced by bus routes, Monaghan and Cavan are not on any Iarnrod Eireann rail networks.

My home county of Leitrim, which is famous for having just one traffic light, does have some rail access on its southern tip with Dromod and Carrick on Shannon on the Sligo to Dublin rail line.

But in terms of connections, public transport links between Carrick and towns like Mohill and Ballinamore are sparse at best compared to the time when the Cavan-Leitrim Narrow-Gauge line was still in operation, while the northern half of Leitrim is isolated from the rail network, although Manorhamilton is about a 30 minute drive from Sligo Station.

Co Meath is an interesting case. In many ways it is one of the most accessible counties by road, but in terms of rail it is cut off. While Laytown station on the East coast and Drogheda station just over the county border in Louth provide access to Dublin, the inland section of the county is not on any network, with the proposed Navan to Dublin line very much on the long finger.

On the far side of the country, Co Clare has access to Dublin, Limerick and Galway via Ennis train station while the western fringe of the county is accessible by bus. However Clare has excellent air links because of Shannon Airport.

But which county do you believe has the worst public transport services?
