Homeowners whos properties have been damaged by pyrite will be able to apply to a €10 million State fund from next week. It comes 7 years after the problem first emerged.

More than 10,000 homes were identified by the Pyrite Resolution Board as having been damaged by subsidence and cracks in walls.

Pyrite is a natural mineral which has caused subsidence and cracks in some properties.

However it is expected that only the most severe cases will qualify for repairs estimated at between €40,000 and €50,000 per property.

To qualify, homes must be assessed by the boards damage verification process.

Only homes completed between January 1997 and December 2013 in Dublin city, Fingal and in counties Meath, Kildare, and Offaly qualify.

Pyrite Action Group Chairperson Peter Lewis says this is great news.
