Lawyers for the Irish Bank Resolution Corporation (IBRC) are expected to submit their arguments today as the appeal of Sean Quinn Junior against his 3-month jail sentence continues.
The 33-year-old was jailed in July by the High Court for breaching an order put in place to stop assets in the Quinn International Property Group being moved beyond the reach of the bank.
His lawyers have not finished putting forward their case to the Supreme Court.
Essentially they say it is legally wrong for him to be jailed in order to put pressure on his father Sean Quinn Senor to comply with coercive orders secured by the bank.
His legal team submit that if Mr. Quinn Senior has ultimate power one would wonder why his son is in jail.
The 33-year-old was sentenced for facilitating a payment of US$500,000 to a senior Quinn employee in the Ukraine.
It is a finding he denies.
Newspaper reports this morning claim the Quinn family had contracts with Russian companies that provided for multi-million euro payouts for termination of their employment.
According to The Irish Times documents taken from a damaged computer in Russia show family members of bankrupt businessman Sean Quinn were in line for payments of almost €36 million each.
It says the computer records also show contracts providing for a termination payment of almost €15 million for Sean Quinn Junior.
It is understood lawyers for the former Anglo Irish Bank want the Supreme Court to admit the material in an appeal by Mr. Quinn Junior against his imprisonment for contempt.
Lawyers for IBRC – formerly Anglo Irish Bank – are expected to robustly defend the handling by the High Court of the contempt when the appeal against the finding continues at the Supreme Court today.
