When it comes to getting around the country, the home of Virginia is seemingly virgin territory for more than one in three Irish people – as 35 percent of those questioned in a recent survey were unable to locate county Cavan.
The Irish geography poll was carried out by the Jurys Inn hotel chain, and showed that one in five of us is incapable of pointing out where county Mayo lies on the map of Ireland. Almost the same is true for Tipperary.
On this evening’s The Right Hook, guest host Shane Coleman spoke to Dr Adrian Kavanagh, a geography lecturer at NUI Maynooth, as well as Derek Davis, the Irish broadcaster, about how it is that we’re so confused about where our counties are despite the country being rather small.
