Following the extended break, during which Miriam O'Callaghan stepped in to cover his show, John Murray returned to RTÉ radio this morning. During the opening of the John Murray Show, the presenter opened up about the health reasons behind his hiatus. You can hear his piece below:

After thanking O'Callaghan, his team and his family & friends, Murray explained how he has been suffering from depression. "One minute I’m happily presenting this radio show and enjoying life," Murray stated, "and the next I’m gripped with dread and anxiety and the simplest task is beyond me… Depression doesn’t drop in, say hello and head for the hills. No, it took a fancy to me and decided to take up residence for a few months and, boy, did it make its presence felt."

Murray also thanked his audience for all their kind words, saying "I discovered in my arsenal a secret weapon - you the listener… thanks for making the tougher days a bit easier with your love and concern."

Murray says he's reluctant to provide advice to anyone finding themselves in a similar position, because "everyone is different. One thing I will say... don’t be too hard on yourself, you haven’t failed life’s test, share your thoughts and feelings with others, and don’t suffer in silence."

As for anyone who might know someone with depression, Murray urges that they shouldn't "be afraid to contact them… they mightn’t reply immediately or at all, but they will appreciate that someone is thinking of them. I know I did".

There has been an extremely positive, encouraging response to John Murray's public acknowledgement of his fight with depression, with 'John Murray' one of the top trending Twitter topics in Ireland this morning.
