Online fashion retailer Asos has withdrawn a batch of metal-studded belts after they were found to be radioactive.

An internal report has revealed the leather belts tested positive for Cobalt-60 and could cause injury if worn for more than 500 hours.

The company says the belts were recalled at the beginning of this year and all those who had bought them had been contacted.

ASOS has websites targeting the UK, USA, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Australia and also ships to over 190 other countries from its central distribution centre in the UK.

The company says it attracts 16.6 million unique visitors a month and has 8.7 million registered users and 4.7 million active customers from 160 countries.

In a statement to Newstalk, the company said "A product supplied to ASOS did not meet UK health and safety standards. ASOS worked with all relevant authorities and undertook a precautionary product recall, in line with our high standards of quality and customer care. No other ASOS product lines are affected".

"ASOS continues to work with the relevant regulatory authorities and is in dialogue with the supplier and the factory workers involved to ensure a satisfactory outcome" it added.
