A convicted rapist has been ordered to let his probation officer know if he plans to leave the country over the next two and a half years.
In 2003, Barry McGee, of Foxfield Grove, Raheny, Dublin, was sentenced to seventeen years in prison for raping two Australian women.
On May 5th 2002, Barry McGee armed himself with a knife and subjected the women to four hours of rape, torture and terror in their Dublin home.
The investigating Garda described it as the “most gruesome” case he had ever covered.
One of the women was convinced she was going to die.
Following his release in 2013, McGee went to Poland to visit a former cell mate of his, and he also went on a holiday to Portugal two years later with the father.
His post-release supervision is due to run for another two and a half years, and today his probation officer asked the court to impose a condition, requiring him to give at least two weeks’ notice if he plans to leave Ireland again during that time.
His barrister claimed it was disproportionate and unnecessary, but Mr Justice Paul McDermott disagreed.
He said he felt it was in the best interests of McGee’s continued rehabilitation and also for the protection of the public given the seriousness of the crimes.
