Reaction to Frances Fitzgerald's appointment as Justice Minister

A number of interest groups have welcomed Frances Fitzgerald's appointment as Justice Minister.

The Youth Council has paid tribute to her time as Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, especially her work on the Children's Rights Referendum.

However, other organisations say she has a lot more work on her agenda in her new role at the Department of Justice.

The Gay and Lesbian Equality Network says a lot of work remains to be done ahead of next year's same sex marriage referendum. The referendum was a priority for the former minister Alan Shatter, who resigned last night.

Denise Charlton is the President of the Immigrant Council of Ireland. She says she hopes Frances Fitzgerald brings a number of long-awaited reforms forward:

 

Former Fine Gael TD Lucinda Creighton has extended congratulations to Ms. Fitzgerald.

Creighton believes that the controversies which have hit the Department of Justice lately were only going to have one result - the resignation of Alan Shatter:
