The government decision by government to recognize the partnerships of same-sex couples from abroad could have a positive impact on our economy.

That is according to the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network - GLEN.

The Justice Minister has announced his decision to recognize same-sex couples who married in Denmark and the US State of Washington.

Partnerships from 35 jurisdictions are now recognized here.

GLEN claims this recognition can be a factor in boosting direct foreign investment here.

It says this sends positive signals to multinationals who are considering investing in Ireland.

Measure brings Ireland 'up to date'

The order builds on previous similar ones and means that 43 forms of marriage or civil partnership of lesbian and gay couples from 35 jurisdictions are now recognised in Ireland and have the same rights and entitlements as Irish Civil Partnership.

Irish-based couples in any of these relationships will automatically be subject to the same legal regime and the same rights and obligations as a couple who enter into a civil partnership in Ireland.

Announcing the making of the order Minister Shatter said "It is important that same-sex couples who register their relationships in other jurisdictions enjoy the recognition and benefits of the Irish civil partnership legislation, on their return or relocation to Ireland".

"As the legislative landscape continues to change internationally, this measure ensures that Ireland remains up to date in this regard and that such registered partners are afforded the full protection of the law" he added.

Brian Sheehan is from the equality group.

He says this is a bonus for Ireland.

Speaking in October, Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore said he supports same-sex marriage.
