The Minister for Health says he is “quietly confident” that the Health Service Executive (HSE) can deal with its budget deficit which could reach a €500 million by the end of the year.
€130 billion worth of savings must be made in the health service by December.
Minister James Reilly says measures have been put in place to deal with the deficit.
He made the comments as Tallaght Hospital in Dublin applied for a €12 million bank overdraft to see it through to the end of the year.
The news comes after the Health Service Executive (HSE) announced that its budget overspend climbed to €374 million at the end of September.
This compares with €329 million at the end of August.
Minister Reilly says he has confidence in the management at Tallaght hospital.
He also says frontline services cannot be cut any more so savings will have to be made elsewhere.
