A woman who settled her legal action for an alleged misinterpretation of her smear sample says she hopes she has done enough to secure her children’s future.
In 2017, 32-year-old Lynsey Bennett from Ennybegs, Killoe, Co Longford, was diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer, which required surgery.
Due to the delay in diagnosing it, she sued the HSE and the US lab that analysed her slide, claiming it was allowed to grow and spread without detection.
Afterwards, Ms Bennett, who has been told she has a “limited life expectancy,” said she felt relieved that her daughters would be taken care of.

“I can now focus on my own fight to stay alive as long as I can,” she said.
“To my daughters Zoe and Hayley, I hope I have done enough to secure you both a future free of financial worries and that, even with me not here to guide you, that you can both pursue your dreams.
“And remember, mammy loves you.”
In a statement read out in court today, the HSE expressed its “deep regret” to Ms Bennett and her family; however, there was no admission of liability.
