In December 2012, the memorable photos of a Japanese macaque monkey dressed in a coat and found in a Canadian Ikea store became an instant meme.

The story did not end there, though, even if the internet moved on. Instead, there was a trial involving the monkey's original owner and the monkey - named Darwin - was placed in the care of Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary. He is now said to be "a much larger, energetic and rambunctious juvenile."

Circumstances have changed again, and now the sanctuary is looking to relocate to pastures new - the site of a former zoo.

On the sanctuary's IndieGoGo fundraising page, the organisers write that "a new larger property will allow Story Book to provide more monkeys a safe home as well as improve the environment of our current residents. It will also allow us to expand our education & advocacy programs in the surrounding communities, create a primate internship program and hire our first permanent staff to manage our expanded facility.

"We are also developing a business plan for the new site that will generate social enterprise revenue for the sanctuary, allowing us to be self-sustainable," they add.

There are already twenty monkeys living on the proposed property - including two other Japanese macaques.

The sanctuary, which is run by a group of around 30 volunteers, says there are thousands of monkeys in Canada that need a home, partially as a result of the "underground trade in exotic animals as well as the biomedical laboratory industry, both of which can result in traumatic situations for the animals."

You can find out more about the efforts to rehouse Darwin and 21 other monkeys here.
