Most tenancy disputes are because a renter refuses to leave the property, the Residential Tenancies Board has said.

The RTB has published its annual report and revealed in 2021 there were 97,000 tenancy registration applications.

It received €9.5 million in registration fees last year and a further €11 million in exchequer funding.

The board handled just over 5,600 dispute applications and there were slightly under 600 tribunals; a third of them related to rent arrears and a tenant who refused to leave their home after the end of their tenancy.

Deposit retention, the validity of termination notices and landlords not fulfilling their obligations to maintain a property were also common reasons for complaints.
