The firm Lonmin says only 13% of workers reported for duty this morning.
44 people were killed in union violence around its Marikana mine earlier this month including 34 people shot dead by police.
Production has not yet resumed.
Reports say workers blocked colleagues from going down mine shafts and used threats of violence to snarl transport at the mine.
Last week South Africa held a week of mourning for those killed in the worst violence of its kind since the end of apartheid.
The miners’ strike has raised fears of cuts in supplies of the precious metal and pushed the spot price of platinum up 10.5% over the past fortnight.
South Africa has some 80% of known global platinum reserves.
