Police say they have received reports of looting near the scene of an explosion at a fertiliser plants in the American state of Texas. Up to 15 people are feared dead and 160 injured in the blast which was heard 45 miles away.

The explosion happened in the town of West near Waco.

Police estimate the number of dead following the explosion at between 5 and 15 while at least 160 are injured.

Some people were taken to hospital suffering breathing problems after inhaling chemicals in the air. Emergency services are still searching for survivors in nearby buildings that were badly damaged.

A high school has also been opened for those trying to find loved ones.

William Swanton is from the Waco Police Department. He confirmed 'a number of fatalities'.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. Investigators say they are examining whether the blaze is the result of criminal activity or the result of a chemical reaction.

Power was also knocked out to the wider community. The explosion happened shortly after 8pm local time and sent toxic fumes in the air.
