RTÉ has informed the Government it will look to reduce its staff by 20%, or roughly 400 people, to stem a “financial crisis”.
The Irish Times reports the staff cut is among several measures being proposed to cut costs in the national broadcaster following a financial crisis since the revelations surrounding undeclared payments to Ryan Tubridy earlier this year.
In a statement to Newstalk, RTÉ said it will publish its "strategic vision" tomorrow afternoon following a meeting with unions and staff representative groups and a briefing of RTÉ staff by Director General Kevin Bakhurst.
The new strategic plan for the broadcaster also proposes to increase spending on independent productions and cut some services.
The plan also seeks to reduce the amount of staff who earn over €100,000 a year.
The broadcaster is also believed to be looking into selling off part of the Donnybrook campus.
RTÉ will reportedly begin the process of moving some production from Dublin to Cork, and later to expand in Limerick and Galway by 2025.
RTÉ operations
There are roughly 1,800 employees in RTÉ, 200 of which are part-time.
The Trade Union Group (TUG) in RTÉ is calling for the broadcaster's new strategic plan to be released to staff immediately.
In a statement, the TUG says "it's not acceptable that staff should find out about the plan in this way", leaving them "worried about the security of their jobs".
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar also said the Government will not allow RTÉ to cease operating, noting RTÉ will need a bailout before the end of the year.
