The Revenue Commissioners has defended its new online guide to the property tax. The new interactive website on Revenue.ie provides homeowners with an estimated value of their property.

But some users have complained that the site is providing inaccurate and confusing information.

Revenue says the site should only be used as a starting point to assist people in calculating the value of their home.

Dr. Keith Walsh is from the Revenue Commissioners. He says its up to home owners themselves to make their own assessment.

Meanwhile Revenue is to begin distributing tax forms to 1.8 million householders nationwide. Yesterday it launched the online guide which is based on the average price in the area and the age of the house.

The Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte says the property tax is as fair as you can get.
