The Revenue Commissioners have told over 50,000 homeowners they will begin deducting unpaid property tax from pensions or wages within the next week.

In a compliance update, Revenue says those in receipt of a reminder letter have 7 working days from the date of the letter to file their on-line return to prevent the money being taken from payroll - through instructions to their employer - or their pension provider.

The body says if you have received a reminder letter but have already filed your return you should contact the LPT Helpline on 1890-200-255 and confirm that you have already filed a return.

"This could arise where the return was filed under a different name and PPS number to the property owner on Revenue's property register or where the address used was slightly different to the address on our record" it says.

Letters like this have been sent to over 50,000 homeowners

But it adds that if you have received a reminder letter but are not the owner of the property, that you need to contact the Helpline with the name, address and PPSN of the liable person.

Revenue goes on to say "Don’t ignore the letter. If you do, Revenue will instruct your employer or pension provider to deduct the amount of the Estimate from your wages or pension".

To date, over €1.58 million of property tax have been filed and over €175 million has been collected.
