The chance of fire breaking out in your home increases at Christmas time.

On Christmas Day itself, there is a 12% increase in the number of fire call outs, according to Direct Line insurance.

Christmas tree lights, frayed leads, faulty extension cables are all possible fire hazards - but they may not be covered by your home insurance.

People Insurance CEO Paul Walshe has warned people to make sure the electrical goods they use are safe.

“If you’re using last year’s Christmas tree, particularly if it’s one that already has wiring or lighting on it, we ask just that you be careful of frayed wires,” he said.

“If you’re going to buy new Christmas lights this year, please make sure they have the European safety symbol ‘CE’.

“If you’re going to use an extension cable, be careful of the ones with too many sockets on them.

“Yes, I know it’s convenient but at the same time, it does overload those fuse boards.”

Candles

Mr Walshe also warned people to be particularly careful when they light candles of any kind.

“Using scented candles - and I love the effect of them around the fireplace - but they can create fire,” he said.

“So, if you’re going to use them, try to make sure they’re in your own jar and keep them away from loose fittings.

“Particularly, some of the decorations around the fireplace or Christmas cards.

“Do switch off those lights at night and blow out those candles before you go to bed.”
