Parts of the south have been struck by heavy rain overnight with a risk of flooding.

An Orange warning for rain for Cork and Kerry is in place, lasting until midnight tonight.

Waterford will be under an Orange Warning for rain from midday, with Yellow Warnings for rain for Clare, Limerick, Galway and Mayo for the whole day.

“In these locations throughout the course of the day, we expect to see very heavy falls of rain - up to 60, 70 millimetres,” Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel said.

“And even higher totals on some parts of mountainous areas.

“So, this will lead to the risk of localised flooding, some river flooding and with some strong onshore winds there is a risk of coastal flooding overtopping as well.”

The Road Safety Authority has warned drivers not to drive through flooded roads as they could be deeper than they might seem.

“We do expect to see road conditions this morning - rather treacherous right across the country,” he said.

“Especially so for those counties that are under that Orange Status warning.

“There will be quite a lot of excess water on the roads and with that we see those rovers overflowing as well, it does lead to the potential risk of some significant flooding there.”

While the Status Orange Warning remains in place, Met Éireann has advised people to stay away from the coast entirely.
