The name of the road the Russian Embassy is located on could be changed to 'Independent Ukraine Road', under new plans.

The Irish Times reports that a sub-committee of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council (DLRCC) has unanimously voted in favour of the name change proposal.

The motion was put forward by Labour Councillor Peter O’Brien and adopted by all 20 members at the meeting.

Cllr O’Brien said the motion was inspired by countries including Latvia, Lithuania, Albania and Norway, who've all changed the names of the streets housing Russian embassies to associate them with Ukraine.

He said the name change was intended as a “gesture of solidarity” with the Ukrainian people, noting that “If the war ended in the morning, I’d be delighted to drop the proposal.”

DLRCC will now host a plebiscite, asking local residents their views on the proposed name change.

The Embassy is situated on Orwell Road, which runs from Rathgar to Windy Arbour.

Just one half of the road is within DLRCC boundaries - with Dublin City Council (DCC) responsible for the other half.

DCC is set to vote on the proposed name change next Monday.
