Calls have been made by road safety campaigners for real-time drivers information to be made available to Gardaí at checkpoints.
This would allow them to see motorist’s disqualifications if stopped, as well as their driver number and insurance.
Gardaí can currently access the Irish Motor Insurance database for drivers insurance policies but the system does not have real-time capacity, meaning Gardaí can't check for disqualifications.
President of the Garda Representative Association Mark O’Meara told The Pat Kenny Show that recent advancements have hugely improved policing on Irish roads.
"The information that is live to them now is something that is a complete game changer to [our members]," he said.
"I mean, if you think before, I may have had to stop you and make a demand, a physical demand, for a license or an insurance policy, and then 10 days later - which was the time limit allowed - you produced it.
"You were very much dependent on detecting whether or not the person producing the insurance policy or the driving licence was the same person you stopped 10 days beforehand in some other part of the country.
"Whereas now this is completely live information and therfore you can see whether or not the person you stopped is in fact in possession of a full driving license or whether they have just a learning permit."
Mr O'Meara said this update makes a "huge difference".
