The man found dead on a Dublin city centre street this week has been identified by Gardaí.
The man died while sleeping rough on St Andrew’s Street in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Gardaí have been investigating the death in the days since and this morning a spokesperson confirmed that the man has now been identified.
They said a post-mortem has been arranged and investigators are now preparing a file for the coroner.
It is understood the man was found dead by a homeless organisation and there was no form of identification on his body.
"Absolutely devastated"
Earlier this week the ‘A Lending Hand’ homeless charity said it was absolutely devastated at the death – and warned that the danger in Irish homeless hostels is forcing people to sleep on the streets in the capital.
“One of our pals lost their life on the streets this morning,” they wrote.
“To say we are absolutely devastated is an understatement. We knew this would happen when people are taking their chances on the streets in freezing temperatures because the hostels are worse than the streets.
“How in 2024 does that even make sense?
“Serious questions need to be asked; how can the streets be safer than a hostel?”
Homeless
Last week, the Government confirmed that more than 13,500 people were living in emergency accommodation in November.
The Department of Housing figures included a record high of 4,105 children facing Christmas without a home.
Meanwhile, Threshold is warning that nearly 1,200 more households are facing eviction in the coming months.
A Cold Weather Advisory remains in place for the entire country until tomorrow morning.
