Ryanair says it expects "most if not all" of its flights to be grounded from midnight next Tuesday due to the coronavirus measures in effect across Europe.

The airline says from midnight on Tuesday 24th March that it only expects to operate a "very small number of flights to maintain essential connectivity, mostly between the UK and Ireland".

Until then, the airline will be operating at over 80% reduced capacity - with all affected customers now being contacted about their options.

However, the company also says it will remain in contact with the different European governments in terms of the repatriation of EU citizens, and "may operate rescue flights to support this repatriation" if needed.

In a statement, Ryanair said the ongoing coronavirus situation has "hugely disrupted" their schedules.

The company said: "Ryanair sincerely regrets all disruptions caused by this unprecedented COVID-19 crisis.

"The safety and well-being of our people and customers is our main priority and we will continue to comply with all WHO and EASA guidelines, as well as all Government travel restrictions which have been imposed over recent days to combat the COVID-19 pandemic."

"All our thoughts and prayers are with our people and our customers and their families as we work our way through this crisis."

Many countries in Europe and elsewhere have imposed significant travel restrictions amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, and the Government here is advising against all non-essential travel for now.
