A 39-year-old sailor has died onboard the LÉ Róisín in Cork.
The Defence Forces said Leading Seaman Conor Kiely "died suddenly" on Friday afternoon.
Paramedics were called to the ship, after Mr Kiely was found unresponsive by his colleagues.
The vessel was in-dock for maintenance in Cork, the Defence Forces said.
The Chief of Staff of the Irish Defence Forces, Lieutenant-General Seán Clancy, has expressed his sincere condolences to the family and friends of Leading Seaman Kiely.
Flag Officer Commanding of the Naval Service, Commodore Michael Moore, said he sends his deepest sympathies to his family and colleagues.

Leading Seaman Kiely was a native of Cork and joined the Naval Service in 2006, qualifying as a Seaman Gunner in 2007.
He served in a number of positions during his career.
At sea, he served onboard the LÉ Aisling, LÉ Niamh, LÉ Orla, LÉ William Butler Yeats and most recently as a crew member of the LÉ Róisín.
After completing a Potential NCO Course in 2013, he went on to use his skills and experience as an instructor in the Naval College.
The Officer Commanding Naval Operations Command in the Naval Service, Captain Kenneth Minehane, said: "The members of the Naval Service have sadly lost a shipmate and friend.
"Our thoughts and prayers go to his family at this sad time. Our dearly departed colleague will be missed and never forgotten," he added.
