The US state legalised same sex marriage on December 6th but the first ceremonies could not take place until yesterday because of Washington’s celebration of marriage three day waiting period.
In February, Governor Chris Gregoire signed the same sex marriage bill that was passed by the state. Voters took to the polls on November 6th and passed Referendum 74 with 54% in favour and 46% against the motion.
Washington is ninth state to legalise full same sex marriage rights after Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Maine and Maryland.
Gay and lesbian couples collected their marriage licences on Thursday and tied the knot yesterday after the 72 hour waiting period.
The Seattle Times claims more than 800 couples in Washington claimed their marriage licence on Thursday.
More than 140 couples passed though Seattle city hall after sealing the deal and were greeted by joyous crowds outside.
Mayor Mike McGinn of Seattle city hall said on Twitter:
“We’re ahead of schedule here at City Hall – we can take 10 more couples. If you want to marry here, check in at standby on 5th Ave.”
