The referendum on marriage rights for same-sex couples is to take place in early May.
Ministers were briefed on the options for the referendum at this morning's cabinet meeting.
The latest Ipsos MRBI poll, published in The Irish Times has shown support for same-sex marriage is rising- with 71 per cent saying they would vote in favour of it.
The referendum timeframe has been welcomed by The Gay and Lesbian Equality Network.
Spokesperson Brian Sheehan says even if the laws surrounding gay marriage change the values of marriage will stay the same:
It's understood the referendum will be held alongside a vote on lowering the age at which people can run for President.
The by-election to fill a vacant Dáil seat in Carlow-Kilkenny is also likely to be held on the same day.
