Saudi women have taken to the roads today, to protest against the ban on female drivers, despite warnings that they faced possible legal action if they were caught.

Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world that imposes a state ban on women drivers.

Although there is nothing which legally states women cannot drive, only men are granted licenses.

About 17,000 people signed a petition calling either for women to be allowed to drive - or for an explanation of why the ban should remain.
