The owners of the Savoy Cinema in Dublin have confirmed they are "considering" subdividing the main screen.

In a statement, owners IMC say they are "considering this change at present."

"However no final decision had been made."

But they also say the screen size of Savoy One would not be affected by the change.

Screen one, called Savoy One, is the largest of its screens.

It comes after rumours began swirling on social media in relation to the future development of the cinema.

The cinema was built in 1929 on the site of the old Granville Hotel, and it was changed in 1954 to incorporate a large CinemaScope screen.

The first modernisation took place in 1969 when the cinema was divided into two screens.

Further reconstruction meant the installation of extra screens. While in 2005 another refurbishment took place costing some €2m.

The cinema has been the scene of countless Irish premieres - including 'Alexander', 'Ghostbusters', 'Brooklyn', 'Oblivion' and 'Lincoln'.
