While most of us are guilty of being too attached to our smartphones, no one can really compare to this German schoolboy who drained an entire pond in an attempt to retrieve his iPhone.

The young boy was out on a fishing trip with his school angling club when his phone slipped out of his hand and into the pond below.

When his club mates refused to let him put on his diving gear and search the pond for the lost phone, the 16-year-old student decided to take matters into his own hands.

The German boy returned to the pond later that night with two hoses, a powerful pump and a plan to drain the entire pond.

'‘I knew the phone was probably dead but wanted to get the data card back with the numbers, pictures and videos of my friends," he told the local paper in Cologne, Germany.

"I thought two pumps would drain enough of the water from the pond so I could find my cellphone."

The schoolboy directed the pumping water to the angling club toilet near by in an attempt to drain the pond.

However, he failed to notice the toilet was not connected to a sewage system and so the pond water ended up flooding a car park near by.

The owner of the flooded car park quickly realised the cause and called the police.

The schoolboy was ordered to pay for the damage for the toilet, the clean-up operation and the water to refill the pond.

His diabolical plan was an utter failure and although he didn’t recover his phone, he was seemingly unapologetic for his actions.

"It almost worked," he told the German newspaper.
