Schools in County Clare have closed until at least lunchtime following an alleged bomb threat.

Gardaí are investigating a threatening email sent to a number of schools in the Clare area – which said that “one of the most prolific attacks in Irish history” would be carried out.

According to the Clare Echo, who first reported on the incident, once Gardaí became aware of the situation, they advised all schools in Shannon and surrounding areas to close until 12pm to allow them investigate.

They are currently investigating the credibility of the communication.

Schools in Ennis have also closed, telling parents and guardians that this is due to "circumstances outside our control”.

In a statement from Gardaí, they said that following investigation, they are “satisfied that the security threat is not credible and there is no ongoing risk to the public”.

“Gardaí are engaging with the affected educational establishment with regard to this ongoing incident,” the statement said.

“Any senior management of these establishments with concerns are advised to make contact with Ennis Garda station.

“No further information is available at this time.”

Enquiries are ongoing.
