One of the organisers of the Ballinamore Festival in Co. Leitrim has been explaining why they chose bankrupt businessman Sean Quinn to officially open the event this weekend.

The one-time billionaire will launch proceedings in the town this Sunday.

Mr. Quinn will address the crowd at 4pm once he opens the 47th annual festival.

The Quinn family is currently embroiled in a legal battle with the IBRC over debts to the former Anglo Irish Bank.

A spokesperson for Concerned Irish Citizens has said that many people have indicated that they want to hear the Cavan businessman speak.

The official opening will be followed by an open air concert as well a fireworks display.

Joey Smith says the businessman was a lifeline to the border areas of Fermanagh, Cavan and Leitrim down through the years by offering employment and sponsoring local GAA events.

He has told Northern Sound that they wanted to thank him.
