A major search operation is underway on Lough Ree in Co. Westmeath.

The local RNLI Lifeboat manager says three people went missing earlier after taking a small boat from Hodson Bay after 3pm.

Two have been found and are with ambulance personnel at the moment, while a third remains missing.

The local lifeboat, coastguard helicopter and Athlone sub-aqua team are involved in the search.

However it is being hampered by strong winds.
