A search operation is currently underway for a kayaker who went missing off the coast of Waterford.

He reportedly departed from Helvick Head in Dungarvan just before noon yesterday but did not return to port, prompting the operation to be launched at around 5:30pm in the evening.

Local coastguard and lifeboat units, along with the Rescue 117 helicopter, are involved in the search.

The naval vessel LÉ Aoibhinn is also on-site, coordinating the efforts.

The search is expected to resume this morning.
