A massive search is underway on Lough Derg tonight after an upturned speed boat was discovered earlier.

The RNLI lifeboat from Dromineer is searching the area – while volunteers are also carrying out shoreline patrols.

The 20-foot speedboat was spotted upturned close to the shore near Garrykennedy on the Tipperary shore.

The alarm was raised at around 9.30pm and a search was quickly mounted.

The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard and the Shannon-based rescue helicopter are are expected to arrive at the scene shortly.

It’s not known whether there was anyone in the boat when it capsized.
