The teenager has since been pronounced dead in hospital.

The bus was empty apart from the driver who was uninjured.

Waterford Mayor Jason Murphy said the "hearts of the people of Waterford go out" to the families at "this very difficult time".

He noted the crash happened near his own area, which is a "very tight-knit community".

Deputy Mayor Adam Wyse said the "whole of Waterford seems to be thinking about it and grieving".

"That could be anybody's child," he said.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

They are particularly interested in talking to anyone who was travelling on the Cork Road in Waterford city between 1.45am and 2.15am and may have camera footage.
