Christopher Stokes has been remembered for his smile and happiness at his funeral today.

The 19-year-old is one of three teenagers who tragically died after the car they were in entered the River Corrib at Menlo Pier in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Mourners heard Christopher had recently rejoined the local boxing club and was a keen Chelsea supporter.

Fr Kevin Blade said he and John Keenan Sammon, who also lost his life in the incident, had always been close.

“Christopher and baby John were very good friends,” he told mourners.

“They died as they lived - together.

“They will be buried in the same cemetery, in the same ground and we pray that they will enter heaven together hand in hand.”

John was laid to rest on Wednesday and the third victim, Wojcieck Penek, will be buried on Friday in Kilkenny.

The investigation into their deaths is ongoing and Gardaí have appealed for anyone near Menlo and Pier Headford Road between 1.40am and 2.40am on Saturday to get in contact.
