Secondary school teachers are to mount industrial action from October 2nd.

The move by members of the ASTI follows on from its rejection of the Haddington Road deal.

Seventeen thousand secondary school teachers, attached to the ASTI, will withdraw from meetings outside of normal school hours on Wednesday 2nd of October- including staff and parent teacher meetings, in-service training and school planning.

ASTI members are also being directed to withdraw co-operation with any inservice organised for the new Junior Cycle Framework , and won't fulfill duties arising from vacated middle management posts unless they are pensionably re-munerated it.

General Secretary Pat King says while teachers are anxious not to disrupt their students education .. the litany of cuts imposed by government has done just that.

ASTI members will now have their pay cut more deeply than if they'd signed up to the Haddington Road deal.

Meanwhile, the Irish Medical Organisation says new proposals from the HSE to reduce the working hours of junior Doctors aren't sufficent enough to warrant a fresh ballot of its members who had been due to strike from Wednesday of this week.

The IMO says it needs greater clarification but the strike remains suspended for the time being.
