Expect more police on the streets of Belfast in the run up to Christmas. That is the message from the PSNI Chief Constable after a car bomb partially exploded at Victoria Square last night.

Matt Baggott says the provision of additional resources is to reassure the public and retailers. However, he is urging the public to be vigilant

The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has condemned the incident, calling it attempted murder.

The 60 kilogram bomb partially exploded in a car last night after the vehicle was earlier hijacked by men in boiler suits.

Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey has slammed those behind the attack, stating that it will achieve nothing while endangering many people.

Speaking today Mr. Maskey said "The bomb attack last night in Belfast City centre was completely reckless and endangered may local people and indeed those who were visiting Belfast".

"Had this bomb detonated to its full capacity we could very well be dealing with many injured or killed".

"Almost 20 years after the first ceasefires these groups still have not realised that there is no community support for their actions. The vast majority of society has endorsed the peace process and want to move forward" he added.

PSNI Chief Constable Baggott says he has no doubt who was behind this latest attack.
