A security lockdown has been lifted at the White House after a plane entered restricted airspace over Washington this afternoon.
The light aircraft was detected shortly before 2pm Irish time and fighter jets were sent to the area.
Offices at the US Capitol building were evacuated and the North Lawn of the White House was cleared.
The lockdown was lifted after security forces said they were not treating the plane as hostile.
Senior officials across the interagency are monitoring the situation on a national event conference call. @NORADCommand aircraft are on site and responding. Plane is not considered hostile at this time.
