A Labour Party Senator has described as "undemocratic" reports today, that TD's could invoke a constitutional provision to force a referendum on abortion.
Under Article 27, the President can refuse to sign a Bill into law if he is petitioned by at least 55 TDs and 30 Senators.
Today’s Sunday Independent reports that several cross party TD's and Senators have met to discuss this possibility.
It follows disquiet among many over how the abortion legislation was introduced.
In a statement this evening, Senator Ivana Bacik says the Oireachtas can no longer avoid making decisions on the X-case legislation.
She says this move is simply political grandstanding:
