The Garda Commissioner again says he was not referring to the character of the garda whistleblowers in his recent use of the word 'disgusting'. Martin Callinan has re-issued a statement insisting he was referring to the manner in which information was being disclosed.

It comes after the Transport Minister called on the Commissioner to withdraw the remark he made at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

The Transport Minister said earlier that he does not share or agree with the criticisms of the whistleblowers.

Leo Varadkar described the actions of Sergeant Maurice McCabe and former Garda John Wilson as 'distinguished'.

Minister Varadkar says he has full confidence in Martin Callinan, but says he is not above criticism.

The Minister was speaking at a road safety conference in Dublin where he thanked Maurice McCabe and John Wilson.

The Chairman of the Road Safety Authority is welcoming the backing by the  Transport Minister of the whistleblowers.

Gay Byrne is calling on the Justice Minister Alan Shatter and the Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan to apologise to Maurice McCabe and John Wilson.
