Hundreds of new sensors on Dublin streets will alert local authorities to breaches in noise levels, pollution and floods alerts. The technology will help shape new local laws on noise and environmental issues.

According to the Irish Independent, this network of sensors will monitor the quality of life in Dublin.

It will work by placing up to 1,200 high tech devices on lamp posts, drains, public buildings and other facilities. The sensor will record environmental information and feed it back to computers operated by Dublin City Council.

If there is a problem, an alert will go off highlighting where it is. The Council then sends someone out to assess the issue.

The project will be a joint venture between Intel and Dublin City Council. It will see 200 'sensing gateways' initially placed around the city to gather and monitor the environmental data.

The Council says the pilot project is an international first, and will give Dublin the infrastructure to be one of the most densely 'sensed' cities in the world.

Technology Editor with the Irish Independent Adrian Weckler outlines how the information can be used.
