A priest in the Diocese of Limerick has stepped aside from his ministry while allegations of a sexual nature are being investigated.

The allegations officially described as a "historical child protection matter" are being dealt with by the Diocese of Limerick, it has been confirmed this evening.

Gardai have also been informed of the allegation, which dates back to the 1990s.
