Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in Ireland are on the increase.
Figures from the Health Service Executive (HSE) show an increase of 59% in STI notifications in Ireland between 2001 and 2011.
This is partly because attendance at clinics has increased but also because of risky behaviour.
The HSE says rising STI rates here have increased the level of concern among health professionals, the government and the public.
Free testing
It is also reminding people that STI screening is free of charge and confidential at many locations country-wide.
It adds that screening services are almost exclusively based in hospitals and special community clinic settings but that in places some GP practices and family planning services may provide STI testing services for a fee.
Professor Mary Horgan is a consultant physician in infectious diseases at Cork University Hospital.
She says most STIs are preventable so managing the risk can keep you safer.
She also has this advice for anyone who is thinking of attending a clinic but who might be nervous about it.
