Shane MacGowan’s family has confirmed that the people of Dublin will have a chance to pay their respects as his funeral cortège makes its way through the streets of the capital.
The legendary singer and songwriter passed away last week at the age of 65, with his wife and family by his side.
MacGowan had suffered health issues in recent years and was only recently released from hospital after reportedly spending time in intensive care.
In a statement this morning, his wife and family thanked the Irish people for the “enormous outpouring of affection and messages of condolence” they have received since his passing.
They confirmed that his funeral cortège will pass through the streets of Dublin on Friday.
Starting at 11am, the procession will set out from the South Lott’s Road Junction on Ringsend Road, continuing onto Pearse Street, passing Pearse Square and then further along Pearse Street, turning left onto Westland Row, and ending at the top of Westland Row, with a nod to ‘Sweny’s Pharmacy’ where the procession will end.
From there the cortège will continue on towards Tipperary where MacGowan’s funeral will be held at St. Marys of the Rosary Church in Nenagh at 3:30pm.
Gardaí have asked that people wishing to pay their final respects to MacGowan gather on the footpath along the Dublin route.
The family said they are “thankful for the many people that loved Macgowan as a musician, songwriter and champion of Ireland and its culture”.
They said they “hope they are, in some way, repaying that loyalty by giving those that loved and admired him a chance to wish him God Speed and say Slán”.
