Calls for Media Minister Catherine Martin to resign have been made by an Independent TD.

Mattie McGrath said “she has to go” amid mounting controversies within the national broadcaster.

Former RTÉ Chair Siún Ní Raghallaigh resigned from her post in the early hours of Friday morning and released a statement which said it was “abundantly clear” she no longer has the confidence of the Media Minister.

That came after the Minister appeared on RTÉ’s Prime Time – and accused Ms Ní Raghallaigh of ‘misinforming’ her about RTÉ exit packages on two occasions this week.

Ms Ní Raghallaigh maintains that she had not made any “intentional misrepresentation” in her meetings with the minister.

Deputy McGrath said Minister Martin has been unjustly scapegoating the former RTÉ Chair in an attempt to deflect blame and is now calling for her resignation.

“A huge chasm has been created between the full board of RTÉ, the chair, the director general - and herself,” he said.

“I think her position is totally untenable and she has to go.”

Pressure is now mounting on the Media Minister after Labour leader Ivana Bacik also told Breakfast Briefing yesterday that she had “questions to answer” over what was a “summary dismissal on air” by the Minister.
