This week's Shopping Trolley Hotline has answered a very important question - what is the best brand of peanut butter?
Both Shopping Trolley Hotline regulars Simon and Kieran declared themselves as “fans” of the food and tried three different brands to decide which is best.
This week’s episode was also a historical first for the show as - for the first time ever - they managed to source three Irish brands to taste test with.
The cheapest at €2.99 was Panda American Style Crunchie Peanut Butter:
“You can find this in every shop across the island,” Simon said.
“I don’t know what the connection is between pandas and peanut butter, I thought they ate bamboo?
He also bought some SuperValu Smooth Peanut Butter.
“That is a kilogram of peanut butter - €5.89, great value,” he said.
“Then, at the top end, we’ve got Nutshed Crunchy Honey Roasted Peanut Butter - this is really posh and it’s my favourite one - at €5.49.”
On the key issue of taste, Kieran described the SuperValu product as “very claggy”.
“That is very smooth, it’s nice taste, it’s the texture that I’m not wild about,” he said.
By contrast, he described the Panda product as a “more moist experience in my mouth”.
“Not a huge amount of crunch in it [but] very sweet,” he said.
Finally, he declared Nutshed Peanut Butter “delicious” and Simon described it as a “gorgeous mix of sweet and savoury”.
Kieran conceded the product was expensive but said he would love to have it again as a “little treat”.
