One sleep expert says it's not a 'one size fits all' approach when it comes to couples getting proper sleep.

Tom Coleman was responding after one doctor in Britain suggested couples should never share a bed with their partner.

Dr Karan Rajan advised couples to forego sleeping in the same bed if they want to get a proper night's sleep.

He also warned of the damaging effect that sharing a bed can have on long-term health.

However Tom told Lunchtime Live it's not as simple as that.

"I suppose it does depend on the situation - I'm not sure the doctor was referring to the damage being done directly by the partner to your health.

"It's probably the consequence of disrupted sleep."

He says there is conflicting evidence on the issue.

"There's a team in the University of Arizona this year just published some research, sort of saying the opposite.

"That it actually improves levels of anxiety, stress, lowers depression, it improves relationship status.

"My feeling on it is that it is personal.

"If your partner is snoring, or if your partner maybe takes over the bed - then it will disrupt your sleep and it will have an impact.

"So I would say it is dependent on the type of behaviour".

'What do you value more?'

He also says that 30% to 40% of Irish couples sleep apart in separate beds.

"There are various reasons for that: maybe they're shift workers or snorers.

"There's so many things that can impact our sleep from... temperature, our beds.

"That's the first thing that I would say to people: invest in a good bed, invest in a large bed, invest in a bed that will help dissipate heat build-up and things like that".

"Get a bedroom divorce before you get a real one", he jokes.

"I suppose what do you value more: is it the sleep or is it the intimacy and the bond with your partner?

"That's a personal decision I won't become involved in".
